Masturbation coaching in Lisbon is private, personalized sex education about self-touch. In your first session with me at Body as Home, you get a non-judgmental space to talk about what you want, what feels stuck, and what you’d like to explore, in person or online. You decide how much you share and how visible you are, and you set the pace. My goal is to help you build a solo practice that feels safe, satisfying, and fully yours.
Why do people feel nervous before a first session?

Most people who contact me have never said any of this out loud. They have a body they live in every day, a private habit or a private curiosity, and nobody they could ask about it. Then they find a website that says “masturbation coach,” and their first thought is usually some version of: Is this really something people do?
It is, and I understand why the hesitation comes first. I’ve spent more than 30 years teaching somatic work, and I’ve learned that the question underneath the nervousness is rarely about technique. It is closer to: Will I be judged for wanting this?
So I’ll answer that first. At Body as Home, nobody gets judged. A session is a place to explore your pleasure, break through blocks, and cultivate a deeply satisfying solo practice with personalized guidance. The rest of this article walks through what that looks like, so you can decide whether it fits you.
Masturbation coaching begins with a welcoming conversation, not a performance.
What is masturbation, and what does a coach actually teach?
The word comes from two Latin roots: manus, meaning hand, and turbāre, meaning to disturb or agitate. Many people use the word only to mean climax or orgasm. It’s much broader than that, just as “sex” doesn’t refer only to penetration.
Because the word can feel narrow, I often use the phrase “pleasure practice.” It covers the many ways you can touch yourself sensually, whether or not orgasm is the point.
As a masturbation coach, I teach three things:
- Erotic self-care, meaning how to treat your own body as something worth nurturing.
- Anatomical self-knowledge, meaning a clearer understanding of how your body is built and where it feels good.
- Preparation for partnered intimacy, meaning how what you learn alone can help you in love-making with someone else.
Clients also discover new pleasure zones, expand their self-touch repertoire, and release belief patterns that cause them distress.
A masturbation coach teaches self-touch as a skill of self-care, self-knowledge, and pleasure, not as a performance goal.
Who is Dr. Liz Ray, and why work with a somatic sexologist in Lisbon?

I’m a certified somatic sex educator and intimacy coach. My practice, Body as Home, is based in Lisbon, and my work draws on more than three decades of somatic teaching. I help men and women learn more about their bodies, pleasure, and safety. Along the way, my clients shed habitual layers, welcome their desires more fully, and reclaim sensual and sexual aliveness.
My services include masturbation coaching, prostate massage, vulva mapping, and intimacy coaching. They’re available to individuals and couples, in person and online. If you want to understand what a somatic sexologist does more broadly, that page explains my approach to somatic sexology and coaching.
I came to this work because touch is basic to our well-being. When people learn to approach their own bodies with attention instead of shame, the benefits reach well beyond the bedroom.
Dr. Liz Ray of Body as Home is a certified somatic sex educator in Lisbon who brings 30+ years of somatic teaching to private, judgment-free masturbation coaching.
Why would anyone choose masturbation coaching?
Because nearly everyone masturbates. Studies report that 95 percent of people do, and it’s the safest sex there is. For many of us, it begins in childhood, when we accidentally discover that touching ourselves a certain way feels nice.
And yet almost nobody is taught how to do it well, or how to make peace with it. We learn by guessing, by habit, or from whatever we happen to see. Old habits can follow us into adulthood, even after they’ve stopped feeling good.
Masturbation can be good for us in many ways. Here is what I tell clients it can offer:
| Possible benefit | Why it matters |
| Stress release | Self-touch can help the body let go of tension. |
| Relaxation and soothing | It can become a calming ritual. |
| Relief from menstrual cramps | It can ease physical discomfort for some people. |
| Nurturing self-care | It treats your body as worth caring for. |
| Better self-knowledge | You learn what your body likes and needs. |
| Learning to orgasm | Practice and guidance can help someone who hasn’t yet. |
| Clearer preferences in partnered sex | You can say what you want because you know it. |
There is also another side. Approached off-kilter, masturbation can become addictive or lead to problematic habits and self-criticism. A coach can help you tell the difference between a nourishing practice and one that has started to cause distress.
Masturbation is nearly universal, yet it’s rarely taught, which is why guided coaching can make a real difference.
What happens in a first masturbation coaching session?
Every session is personalized, so I can’t give you a script. What I can tell you is the spirit of it, and the parts I always keep the same.
You arrive as you are. You don’t need to prepare a performance or have the right words. Some clients know exactly what they want to work on. Others only know that something feels off, flat, or complicated.
We start by talking. I ask what brought you to Body as Home and what you’d like to be different. This is where blocks, beliefs, and habits tend to surface. A block might be shame, a pattern you’ve outgrown, or something you’ve never been able to explain.
You set the direction. Because my guidance is personalized, a client who has never orgasmed and a client who is dependent on over-stimulating toys will have different sessions, even though both are in my care.
I guide, and you stay in charge. I give you a non-judgmental space and offer guidance. You decide what to try, what to skip, and when to stop.
In every session, I’m helping you build the same foundation: self-touch that feels safe and comfortable, and a practice that belongs to you.
A first session is a personalized conversation and guided exploration, led by your needs and your pace.
Is it better to book in person or online?
Both are available. I offer sessions in person in Lisbon and online, and many people choose based on comfort, privacy, and logistics. This table sets out the main differences I can speak to from my own practice:
| In person in Lisbon | Online | |
| Where | At my practice in Lisbon | Wherever you feel comfortable |
| How I guide you | Face to face | By voice and through real-time check-ins |
| Camera | Not applicable | Optional, you may be on or off |
| Demonstration | Depends on the service you’ve chosen | I demonstrate with models |
| Best for | Those who want to be in the room | Those who want privacy or can’t travel |
Neither format is better. The right choice is whichever one lets you relax.
Masturbation coaching works in person or online, and the best format is the one where you feel safest.
What if I don’t want to be seen during online coaching?

You don’t have to be. Visibility is completely optional, and being seen isn’t necessary at all.
When you’re off camera, I guide you with my voice and through real-time check-ins about what you’re experiencing in your practice. The aim is a practice in which self-touch feels safe and comfortable, and that doesn’t depend on whether I can see you.
Some people feel more at ease with the camera off, and others like being on screen. I’m glad either way.
Can a woman coach men in masturbation?
I’m asked this often, and I’m glad people ask rather than wonder in silence. Yes, I offer private male orgasm coaching, and I demonstrate with models, so you’re learning without needing to be the focus of attention.
Men come to me for several reasons. Male orgasm coaching can help men:
- reduce performance anxiety,
- deepen their embodied presence,
- become less dependent on pornography.
I’m also a female orgasm coach. Women come to masturbation coaching for different reasons, and the table below shows the range of support I offer both groups:
| Female orgasm coaching | Male orgasm coaching | |
| Who it can help | Those who’ve never orgasmed, have lost sensitivity from over-stimulating toys, or want to reclaim their bodies after trauma | Men who want less performance anxiety, more embodied presence, or less dependence on pornography |
| What we work on | Self-touch rituals, with or without a focus on orgasm; any questions you have | Embodied presence and a healthier relationship with self-touch |
| Format | In person or online | Online, with demonstrations using models |
I approach all of this as education. My role is to share knowledge and guide your practice, not to judge you or decide what your sexuality should look like.
Dr. Liz Ray coaches both women and men, and her work with men is done online with models for demonstration.
How do I keep masturbation safe?
Safety matters, and I treat it as part of the practice instead of an afterthought. These are the basics I teach:
- Stop if anything hurts. Pay attention to your touch. If it causes pain in any way, stop.
- Wash your hands before and after.
- Begin with awareness. Give yourself a few moments to settle into your body and be fully present, rather than touching yourself absent-mindedly.
- End with awareness too. Close the practice consciously, so you notice how you feel.
None of these steps requires special equipment. They simply ask you to slow down.
Safe self-touch means staying attentive, stopping at any pain, keeping your hands clean, and starting and ending with awareness.
What if masturbation doesn’t feel good?

It happens, and it’s usually fixable. Tiredness, stress, and distraction can all make masturbation uncomfortable or boring. Sometimes the problem is that you’re relying on old habits that no longer feel good, and you need to change things up.
Here is how I think about common situations:
| What you notice | What might be happening | What can help |
| It feels boring or flat | Distraction, tiredness, or stress | Pausing, settling into your body first |
| It no longer feels good | Reliance on old habits | Changing the approach, trying something new |
| Sensation feels dulled | Over-stimulation from high-intensity toys | Balancing toy use with some practice without toys |
If this sounds like you, coaching gives you a place to experiment with support.
Is it okay to use sex toys?
Yes. Sex toys can be useful. The thing to watch is dependence. If you start to notice numbness from high-intensity vibrations, take it seriously, but know that numbness isn’t permanent.
My suggestion is to keep it balanced, with some sessions that use a toy and some that don’t. Mixing them helps you maintain self-awareness, which is the real goal.
Can you masturbate too much?
If masturbation is about pleasurable self-touch, it’s hard to imagine pleasurable touch ever being “too much.” But there are real situations behind the question, and I take them seriously:
- Too much ejaculation, leading to exhaustion.
- Emotional distress, where masturbation leads to instability.
- Injury, through unsafe touch.
If any of these sound familiar, they’re worth addressing and changing. That’s part of what I help clients with.
Pleasurable self-touch is rarely “too much,” but exhaustion, emotional distress, and injury are signs to seek support.
Is masturbation coaching the same as therapy?
No. Sex and intimacy coaching is not psychotherapy. I’m not a licensed social worker or marriage and family therapist, so I offer neither therapy, psychotherapy, nor medical advice. I’m a certified somatic sex educator, and I want you to know exactly what I offer and what I don’t. If you need therapeutic or medical care, please seek it from a qualified professional.
