Scar Treatment

Looking for a C-Section Scar Massage Therapist in Lisbon?

A surgical birth experience makes recovery longer because of the added physical and emotional pain. Scar massage can help decrease or eliminate lingering pain, improving overall tissue mobility and elasticity in the scarred areas.

If you are seeking specialized support for post-operative recovery, book a session with an expert C-Section Scar Massage Therapist in Lisbon today!

Why Schedule an Episiotomy or C-Section Scar Massage Session in Lisbon?

Scars don’t simply sit on the skin’s surface, they impact the tissue layers underneath, often forming adhesions that attach and spread into surrounding body structures. These fascial adhesions can cause pain and tightness in the area, restricting movement and weakening abdominal strength and posture in the case of a cesarean. With an episiotomy, the scar’s thickness can create inelastic tissue and difficulty or pain with penetrative sex.

Luckily, episiotomy t or C-section scar reatments are suitable for new and old scars. Once the surgical wounds have fully closed and the deeper layers of the scar are fully healed (6-8 weeks for a C-section and 4-5 weeks for an episiotomy), it’s safe to have scar therapy. Scar massage treatments break down adhesions, increase blood flow to the area, and reduce the visual appearance of the scar, adding to a client’s full recovery and confidence.

Benefits of C-Section Scar Massage Therapy

Since untreated scars can be connected to numerous symptoms such as chronic back and pelvic pain, UTIs, incontinence, and bowel or digestive problems, scar massage therapy is an excellent investment in your future health. Benefits include:

  • Increased mobility and range of motion in the hips and pelvis
  • The prevention of lower back and pelvic pain
  • Reduced numbness in and around the scar tissue
  • Organs released from scar tissue that regain independent internal movement
  • Increased sensation and visible changes in the abdominal or vulva tissue
  • Detailed instructions for continuing home self-care

What to Expect in a C-Section Scar Massage Session

At your first scar treatment session, we’ll have a detailed conversation about your birth story, your current concerns, including emotional symptoms, any noticeable pain, and health goals.

For a c-section scar, we’ll assess your level of sensation, scar tissue mobility, any abdominis rectus separation, psoas balance, and pelvic alignment. For an episiotomy scar, we’ll assess any pain, tightness, or thickening, determine any areas of sensory loss, and assist you in tracking the scar pathway both visually and tactilely.

I demonstrate the massage methods on a model, answer any questions, and then with your permission, begin treatment of the scar. I end by giving you instructions for continuing self-care and touch at home. The first session is 45 minutes, and any subsequent ones are 30 minutes.

Specifics of a Scar Massage

I make sure the scar is healed before we begin. I then review a variety of finger techniques I’ll be using, demonstrating everything on my own skin for any questions

I offer you a variety of oils to choose from so your skin can be comfortably lubricated. I use finger techniques to gently press, stretch, and twist the scar tissue. They’re simple to learn, and I make sure you have an opportunity to try them out yourself before the session is over.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start cesarean scar release therapy?

I won’t begin treatments until a scar is fully closed and healed. Even though a scar may appear to be healed from the outside, the deeper layers take a bit more time. For a C-section scar, it is best to wait 8 weeks; for an episiotomy, we wait 5 weeks.

Can you teach me to massage my scar myself?

Yes, this is an important part of the session. I can massage the scar, but it is even more ideal if you continue massaging the scar on your own, well after our sessions have ended. This serves several purposes: First, continued massage will break up even more adhesions and smooth your skin. Second, a key aspect of this is your own reclamation of yourself.  Directing positive attention to your scar – and feeling attentive rather than avoiding it – is deeply healing.

How many scar massage sessions will I need?

You can learn to do these yourself, so enough sessions that you feel comfortable doing them is sufficient. Clients typically book 2-4 sessions total.

Is scar massage safe during breastfeeding?

Absolutely. There are no reasons to avoid treating scar tissue once the wound is healed.

Can I combine scar massage with other therapies?

Yes. It is a safe, gentle modality.

My scar is over a year old. Is it still beneficial for me to come in?

Yes. Even decades-old scars can benefit from treatment. The adhesions will be more firmly established over time, but massaging them in order to soften, stretch and disrupt these frozen areas can bring relief and rebalance. Again, the self-care and reclamation of a part of the body that’s been ignored for a long time is extremely healing.
